Quite an active Troop meeting tonight! The first years demonstrated "physically strong" by completing elements of the fitness test such as the timed one-mile run, sit-ups, push-ups, and back saver sit and reach.
In preparation for the 5/16 overnight hike campout, Scout Leaders went over some elements of a backpacking backpack. Topics like the importance of a padded belt that transfers weight to the hips, personal items, and crew items were shared. If other parent leaders would like to add to the discussion of backpacking logistics, we would appreciate it. Let us know if you (or your Scout) will be attending by filling out THIS FORM.
Backpacks -- If your scout needs a backpack for the campout, the Troop has FOUR in the garage for use. Others may have some to share. Do not feel like you must purchase one to participate.
T-shirts -- May 25th is the drop-dead date for Class B Troop t-shirt orders. Scouts were reminded to confirm with their parents whether they have a shirt ordered. Payments can be made at any meeting or to Donn's Venmo here (@SusanBreshears - 4481). Cost is $20 for Class B shirts, please include SIZE and SCOUT NAME in comment. Donn has only received payments from about 1/3 of the people going to Bartle. ESPECIALLY IF YOUR SCOUT IS GOING TO CAMP, PLEASE ORDER ASAP SO WE DON'T HAVE TO REACH OUT INDIVIDUALLY.
May 25th is Memorial Day. The National WWI Museum / Liberty Memorial is celebrating its Centennial this year. They are asking members of KC scouting organizations (including Scouting America Troops and Packs and Girl Scouts) to lay 441 wreaths at the 2026 Memorial Day ceremony, one for each of the 441 Kansas City residents who died serving our country in the Great War. The ceremony is at 10:00 am at Liberty Memorial. Due to the World Cup preparations, there is limited parking. Participants are strongly encouraged to take the KC Streetcar to the event. Troop 50 is to vote on their participation next week.
The meeting started out similar to how a typical post-campout begins. The boys formed a circle and discussed what went well/not so well during the previous campout. It was a constructive, youth lead discussion! Costs from this outing can be found in the attached image. Please make Venmo payments to @LaskerBrian (5394).
IMPORTANT - The next outing will be a backpacking campout on Saturday, May 16th for ONE night. We are finalizing the plans, but we need to ensure we have the proper gear. If you are able to purchase a backpacking pack (something better than a school backpack). This backpack should have a hip belt to transfer the majority of a pack's weight from the shoulders to the stronger hip muscles, significantly reducing shoulder strain and preventing back injury. The troop has only FIVE available to lend. We can purchase more, but need to know ahead of time.
If you have the means to purchase a personal pack, it is strongly recommended. This will be a very fun adventure for the scouts and we would hate to leave anyone behind that wants to go!! If you believe your Scout will be attending and needs a backpack, please fill out THIS FORM. Deadline for this will be early - May 4th end of day to allow leadership to purchase backpacks as needed. We cannot guarantee a loaner backpack if we do not know and the availability will become first come, first serve.
Note: Volunteering adults have the option to skip the backpacking and meet at the campsite if they still want to join.
Arrow of Light crossovers from Pack 50 earned their badges tonight after completing the last of their requirements. Congrats to Forrest, Atchel, Graeme, Billy, Briton, and Henry! Welcome to the Troop!
Donn (Michael's Dad) is handling Class B uniform logistics. Payments can be made at any meeting or to his Zenmo here (Susan Breshears - 4481). Cost is $20 for Class B shirts, please include SIZE and SCOUT NAME in comment. He has only received payments from about 1/3 of the people going to camp. Please do this ASAP so we can get started ordering. We will likely attempt to reach out to those individually in the next week or two and this would save us lots of time.
Very busy night! The boys immediately got to work on logistics for the next campout (they even elected to SKIP opening ceremony!). We are looking at a lot of new scout participation!
Donn (Michael's Dad) is handling T-Shirt logistics. As an option to in-person meetings, payments can be made to his Zenmo here (Susan Breshears - 4481). Cost is $20 for Class B shirts, please include SIZE and SCOUT NAME in comment.
Next weekend is the campout at Bruce's place in Osceola, Mo. This will be a survival campout for ONE night, meet at the church at 9:30am (previously communicated 10am) on Saturday. Scouts will be expected to build a structure that they will sleep in (No tents - tarps will be provided). Bring rope! Practice knots! Google shelter ideas! For our newer scouts, don't be worried! If a newer scout is uncomfortable, exceptions can be made (we will bring tents as a backup if they still want to attempt). If interested, please fill out THIS FORM. Deadline is Tuesday April 14th End of Day.
