Below is a list of generated FAQs that may help answer questions related to Scouting and Troop 50
A: In general, every Scout should wear his Class A uniform to all Scouting meetings, including troop and court of honor meetings. Try to wear Class B to any other activities.
Troop 50 aims to reduce some of the burden placed on newer scouts in to the troop. As such, our Troop only requires a shirt with appropriate flair. Hat, neckerchief, slide, pants, shorts, and belt are optional. The shirt should always be tucked in and orderly. While pants are optional for the 'look,' we highly recommend durable outdoor pants or hiking shorts for activities to prevent scratches and tick bites.
Additional flair you will need to buy for the uniform (if not already attached):
Unit numerals "5" and "0"
Shoulder loops
A: If you are coming from a Cub Scout Pack, be sure to get the necessary items from Arrow of Light! You can't go back! There are a few items to do some the digital end, but otherwise it is pretty straightforward. Contact our Committee Chair, Ed Vogt, for more information.
A: The Grub Master is the Scout responsible for planning the menu and buying groceries for their patrol for a specific campout. Parents usually help with the grocery run, but the Scout does the planning and budgeting!
A: That's ok! Sign up if you think you can make it. As the event draws closer, you can always drop out.
A: Let someone know! The sooner we know, the sooner we can react. We rely on everyone in the troop for logistical matters like ride sharing, gear packing, and food allocations. Unfortunately, late drops may be liable for financial contributions since these are often purchased in advance by Grub Masters and outing coordinators. To ensure that no additional costs are incurred, give notice at least 1 week prior (before the planning meeting).
A: There is still hope! Although we do not want to make this a regular occurrence, we understand that schedules change. Let someone know ASAP. We want to be as inclusive as possible, even if that means letting a person hop in the mix. Understand, food rations may end up being tighter for the group due to the late addition.
A: In Troop 50 we do not have a vast amount of resources available. At this time we lack a large enough support structure to have all of our finances (including each outing) handled by a single person. This means that, unfortunately, this is currently being handled case-by-case. Most often, the outing coordinator will take any initial financial burden and then collect the fees afterword. It is important that repayments be made promptly. Our Leaders volunteer their time and it is disrespectful to ask they take additional financial burden.
A: Generally, a sleeping bag, sleeping pad, a mess kit (plate, bowl, spoon), and the "10 Essentials." Check our Prepare for Campouts page for a checklist so you don't over-pack or forget the basics!
A: NO! The Troop provides heavy-duty tents for all outings. We do this for numerous reasons. Check our Prepare for Campouts page for information on what to bring to campouts.
A: H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation is basically an overnight summer camp geared towards Scouting America advancement. Located on 4,200 scenic acres in the Osage hills of Missouri, it’s not just a summer camp; it’s a Scouting tradition. Bartle is famous for offering the only ten-day camping session in the entire country, giving Scouts more time to dive deep into activities and build lasting friendships. With over 40 merit badges available, Scouts can do everything from climbing towers to sailing on the lake.
In short, "Bartle" is where Scouts go to experience the ultimate summer of adventure and leadership.
A: The cost of the trip varies. 2026 fees are a total of $470 for the 10-day trip. Payment plans are available, and can be made to the Troop Treasurer (typically a check written to Troop 1050). This includes all meals and "lodging". But not being able to afford camp is not a reason not to attend. There are lots of paths available! Reach out to an adult leader for more information if assistance is necessary.
There's a lot of fun to be had at Bartle, and your Scout will learn how to be independent. They will be responsible every day for being present at events and attending their merit badges. Scouts figure it out quickly. If your Scout could benefit from this, they will get it all within the context of a safe environment.
Adversely, if you are concerned about your Scout being away and would like to stay over for just a night (or more), that can be accommodated. There are some hoops to jump through, but and we will help line up the hoops for you.
A list of items that are good to bring can be found in the Prepare for Campouts page.
A: The Inner Circle of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say is a Scouting leadership society specific to our council's camps. It’s an honor society that recognizes Scouts who "live the Scout Oath and Law" in their daily lives. Scouts can be called out for membership starting in their second or third year at Bartle.
A: Life happens! We don’t expect 100% attendance, but we do expect communication. If your Scout is in a leadership role (like Patrol Leader) or is the Grub Master, they should call or text their Senior Patrol Leader (or a fellow Troop member) to let them know they will not be there.
A: We primarily use weekly emails using a list serv. Reach out to an adult leader to be added. Please make sure at least one parent's email is on our distribution list so you don’t miss any critical information.
A: A Blue Card is the official record that a Scout has earned a Merit Badge. Before starting a badge, the Scout gets one from the Scoutmaster. Do not lose this card. While we track advancement digitally, the physical Blue Card is the Scout's "receipt" if there is ever a computer glitch or a discrepancy during their Eagle Scout Board of Review.
A: Advancement is Scout-led! Your Scout should look at the requirements in their handbook. Once they complete a task, they find a higher-ranking Scout or a Leader to sign it off. When all requirements for a rank are done, they request a Scoutmaster Conference and then a Board of Review.
A: At Troop 50 our main focus is to keep a safe, inclusive, fun environment for all of the Scouts. If there are any issues being observed, please bring that up with a Leader IMMEDIATELY. We have a great communication system and will work together to monitor the situation. Scout safety (Mental and Physical) are among our top priorities.
A: We are a volunteer-run organization! You can help by driving to events, becoming a Merit Badge Counselor for a hobby you love, or joining the Troop Committee. See our Become a Leader page for more info.
